Harnessing Photocatalysis and Green Spaces for Sustainable Urban Living

Project in-detail

Utilizing photocatalytic technology and high-altitude plant capsules, the design addresses geological subsidence while promoting sustainability and expanding urban living space.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes a unique photocatalytic sail surface for efficient wastewater treatment.
02
Incorporates high-altitude plant capsules to enhance urban biodiversity.
03
Integrates gravitational energy systems to support water recycling processes.
04
Employs vertical architecture to improve airflow and natural lighting within spaces.
05
Focuses on groundwater recharge as a core component of sustainability efforts.

The RISE OF CITY Geological Subsidence Improvement Tower addresses significant urban challenges in coastal cities, particularly focusing on geological subsidence. This is a pressing issue for major cities such as Shanghai and New York. The design integrates modern technology with urban infrastructure to improve living conditions while reducing the impacts of subsidence. By elevating the earth’s surface, the concept purifies urban wastewater and reinjects it into the groundwater system, creating a sustainable cycle of energy and resource use.

Photocatalytic Technology

Central to the design is the photocatalytic sail surface, which uses sunlight to drive chemical reactions that purify pollutants found in urban wastewater. This technology minimizes reliance on traditional purification methods, contributing to greater environmental sustainability. The project implements advanced techniques that address both pollution and water resource management in urban settings.

Vertical Architecture

The vertical elements of the design enhance light and airflow, critical factors for dealing with thermal and geological issues. Taller buildings provide additional space for residents while utilizing gravitational potential energy. This clever use of height supports wastewater treatment and groundwater recharge. It combines aesthetic considerations with practical needs, showcasing the importance of thoughtful design in urban environments.

Water Purification System

The water purification system features a multi-step process aimed at ensuring thorough treatment of urban sewage. It begins with filtration processes that include sedimentation and disinfection to eliminate harmful substances. The resulting clean water can be reused for irrigation or returned to the groundwater supply. This process improves overall water management in the urban setting.

Green Integration

In addition to technological components, high-altitude plant capsules are included to enhance the urban ecosystem. These green spaces promote biodiversity and help improve air quality while adding visual appeal throughout the area. The blending of natural elements with urban structures fosters a more resilient and lively environment.

The careful combination of modern technology and nature illustrates a commitment to redefining urban living conditions. This project aims to create a vibrant space that encourages sustainability and enhances the quality of life for its residents.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
