02
A polycarbonate roof system allows for ample natural light while minimizing energy use.
03
The design incorporates organic growth ring motifs that symbolize personal growth and mindfulness.

05
The elevated entry path guides visitors into a meditative atmosphere from the moment they arrive.

The Vale De Moses Yoga Retreat is located in a peaceful area surrounded by mountains and dense forests. It serves as a place for guests to escape daily stresses and connect with nature. Rooted in the practice of *Shinrin-Yoku*, also known as "forest bathing," the design promotes mindfulness and renewal through nature-based experiences.

Arrival Experience

The pathway leading to the retreat is carefully designed to set a calming tone. It branches gently, guiding visitors toward the main campus gardens while offering a sense of tranquility. As guests walk beneath the green canopy of trees, the entry is marked by an angular canopy that reflects the shape of the nearby mountains. This design element creates a visual connection to the landscape, inviting guests into a natural environment.

Spatial Configuration

Inside, an open floor plan encourages exploration. Wood-cladded walls rise vertically, while wood planks are set horizontally on the floor. Together, these materials create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The wooden beams support the roof and help maintain a cohesive look, enhancing the connection between the interior and the natural surroundings.

Natural Light and Views

The roof features polycarbonate glazing designed to let in ample daylight, reducing the need for artificial lighting. Large openings on the northern side provide impressive views of the mountains, offering guests a chance to engage with the landscape. The extruded bench frame window creates an elevated seating area, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the soothing environment.

Connection to the Outdoors

On the west side, full-height, operable vertical wood louver doors open the space to fresh air and nature. These features encourage cross-ventilation and blur the lines between inside and outside. Adjacent to the building, a deck serves as a quiet area for contemplation. The use of dark wood siding mirrors the bark of trees, grounding the structure and providing protection from the elements while reinforcing the overall sense of shelter within the natural setting.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
