The Woodland Cemetery is located in a peaceful forest area on the outskirts of Riga, Latvia. It functions as a space for both the deceased and the living. The design emphasizes the relationship between life and death. It aims to create a calm environment that encourages reflection and remembrance.

Design Concept

The layout includes three separate volumes that symbolize the connection between existence and mortality. Visitors start their journey at the entrance altar, the highest point within the cemetery. This elevation provides a shift in perspective, preparing individuals for the reflective experience that follows.

Spatial Experience

As one enters the central volume, a long grey concrete wall comes into view. This wall features two opposing windows that let in natural light. The frosted glass creates a soft glow, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere. This setting helps visitors engage with their thoughts and feelings, inviting contemplation.

Transitional Elements

The design reaches its conclusion at the exit, which includes a pool and a stone bench. This area serves as a pause before reentering the outside world. Sunlight filters through here, signaling a return to daily life while maintaining the themes of memory and connection present throughout the space.

Materiality and Atmosphere

Concrete is the primary material used in the construction, signifying durability—an important aspect for a cemetery. The gravel flooring adds a sense of simplicity that allows focus on the purpose of the space. This minimalistic approach creates an environment conducive to quiet reflection, ensuring a poignant atmosphere for visitors.

In the end, the Cemetery reflects a thoughtful balance between built structures and nature, creating a space where visitors can find solace and meaning in their experience.
