5 key facts about this project
01
Incorporates a geothermal heating system sourced from nearby hot springs.
02
Features greenhouses designed as passive solar chimneys for natural ventilation.
03
Rainwater collected from the café roof is used for greenhouse irrigation.
04
Skylights are strategically placed to enhance natural light within the dining area.
05
The elongated café design maximizes views of the surrounding landscape.

The Vogafjós Greenhouse Restaurant is located near the Mývatn Nature Baths in Iceland, where it brings together the experiences of dining and agriculture. The design focuses on connecting food production with the act of eating. The structure features a long café that makes the most of its scenic views and allows plenty of sunlight to enter the space, enhancing the atmosphere for visitors.

Architectural Concept

The design integrates greenhouses into the dining area, creating a connection that is both functional and visual. The café is positioned to face Southeast, giving diners a view of the landscape while maximizing light exposure. The roof slopes back towards the greenhouses, drawing attention to the agricultural aspect of the project and letting patrons observe food as it grows.

Sustainability Features

Sustainability plays a key role in the design. It uses a geothermal heating system that draws energy from the earth and nearby hot springs. This method efficiently keeps the restaurant warm and reduces the need for other energy sources. The greenhouses also act as passive solar chimneys. This means they allow hot air to rise and escape through vents. Such features contribute to a comfortable temperature in the dining area while being environmentally friendly.

Water Management

An effective rainwater management system is also part of the design. The café's roof is crafted to collect rainwater, which is then directed into underground storage. This water is used to irrigate the greenhouses, promoting efficient use of natural resources. It also ensures that the plants receive necessary moisture, supporting the local food production efforts.

Experiential Design Elements

The dining space includes skylights that fill the interior with natural light. This choice creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests. It also encourages diners to pay attention to the greenhouses nearby, where they can see food being grown. Each greenhouse is carefully arranged to ensure that all plants receive enough sunlight. This enhances not only the productivity of the produce but also the overall experience for diners, who can appreciate the link between growing and eating.

The design brings together the café and greenhouses in a way that highlights the importance of local food sources. The visual connections throughout the space foster a sense of appreciation for the natural environment and the process of food production.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
