Housing Among Stepped Courtyard is located in Berlin and aims to tackle the issue of affordable housing in a city where land costs keep rising. The design focuses on revitalizing forgotten green spaces by integrating residential units into existing courtyards. The concept revolves around a stepped courtyard layout, which preserves existing trees while introducing new green terraces, thus improving both the pleasantness and ecological quality of the urban area.

Conceptual Framework

The design uses a modular approach, allowing for various layouts of residential units. This maximizes space while responding to the specific characteristics of the site. A Top-Down method is utilized to outline each modular design, and then a Bottom-Up process follows to determine the final arrangement. This systematic approach ensures that the layout effectively uses the data generated through design software.

Accessibility and Interaction

Accessibility is a major component of the design. Pathways, bridges, and stairs are included to connect different levels of the courtyard. These features facilitate movement throughout the space and encourage social interaction among residents. The easy navigation fosters community-building through shared areas, enhancing the overall quality of life for those living in the development.

Material Considerations

Wood serves as the primary construction material, reflecting a commitment to sustainable practices. This choice supports the structural needs of the building while limiting environmental impact. Using wood also adds warmth and a natural aesthetic that complements the urban context, making the living spaces more inviting.

Environmental Integration

The design emphasizes green terraces, which offer residents outdoor recreational areas and contribute to urban cooling and improved air quality. These greenery elements not only enhance the ecological value of the space but also blend well with the overall layout. The incorporation of nature supports biodiversity and enriches the living environment.

The careful arrangement of modular units within this thoughtful framework results in a residential environment that balances built structures and natural elements. This combination allows for rich interactions among residents while fostering a sense of community and connection to nature.
