The Evergreen Garden Restaurant is located in the Mývatn region of Iceland, where it combines a greenhouse with dining facilities. The design focuses on strengthening the connection between the built environment and nature. By doing so, it aims to provide a setting that enhances the dining experience while promoting environmental sustainability.

Architectural Concept

The building features intersecting planes that respond to the site's unique topography, creating a clear and coherent structure. Glass facades are prominent, allowing for broad views of the Mývatn baths and the surrounding landscape. This transparency brings natural light into the space, while also making it feel like the indoor area is part of the outside world.

Spatial Layout

Upon entering, guests are led toward a large greenhouse that is easily visible from both dining and bar areas. This open layout provides a sense of connection to the greenery. The east side hosts a recreational terrace, allowing visitors to take photos or observe wildlife. Below the terrace, a multifunctional hall offers space for events or workshops, ensuring that the theme of nature is present throughout the building.

Sustainability and Materiality

The restaurant is set into a slope, which helps it blend into the landscape and improves its energy efficiency. It is connected to geothermal energy from the nearby Mývatn Baths, supporting a sustainable approach. The design includes a wooden finish that adds a simple elegance and a green roof, which helps manage rainwater and regulates temperature. These choices reflect a commitment to eco-friendly practices and enhance the overall quality of the building.

Design Detail

The extensive glass facades invite daylight and foster a strong connection with the landscape. Diners enjoy unobstructed views of the beautiful Icelandic scenery, reinforcing the idea that the experience of eating here is deeply connected to nature. The design captures the essence of the environment, making it an integral part of daily life in the restaurant.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
