The Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant is located near the Mývatn Nature Baths, providing a unique space for visitors to engage with local agriculture. The design focuses on the growth of vegetables, fruits, and berries, allowing guests to see firsthand where their food comes from. This space establishes a connection with the landscape, offering views of both Mývatn Lake and the Hverfjall volcano, while emphasizing sustainability and community interaction.

Architectural Layout

Upon arrival, visitors first notice the greenhouse, which draws attention to the process of food cultivation. This feature is complemented by the sight of the Hverfjall volcano in the background, creating a visually appealing entrance. The terrain gently sloping down leads to a glazed wall that integrates the restaurant into the landscape, allowing it to blend well with its surroundings.

Interior Environment

Inside the restaurant, the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The open layout highlights the relationship between the interior and the views outside. On the left side, the dining area features large glazed panels that frame panoramic views of Mývatn Lake. This not only fills the space with light but also encourages diners to appreciate the scenery. A staircase leads to the greenhouse, enhancing the interactive aspect of the dining experience and allowing guests to connect with the food being served.

Multipurpose Functionality

A key feature of the design is a multipurpose hall located at the center of the restaurant. Equipped with movable walls, this space can adapt to different uses, such as movie nights, yoga classes, or art exhibitions. This flexibility promotes community engagement and enriches the visitor experience by providing opportunities for various activities.

Accessibility and Future Development

Accessibility has been thoughtfully planned. The parking area, located to the north, accommodates up to 50 cars and five buses. Pedestrian pathways connect the parking lot to the greenhouse, making movement easy for all visitors while preserving the landscape's natural beauty. There are also plans for future expansion, which may include additional greenhouse units and pathways with scenic overlooks of Mývatn Lake.

Glazing is a prominent feature throughout, allowing natural light to fill the spaces. This design choice not only enhances the ambiance but also reflects the changing Icelandic weather, creating a dynamic indoor environment for diners and visitors alike.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
