The Coffee Shop Under The Hverfjall Volcano is located at the base of Hverfjall in northern Iceland. It serves as a café and visitor center, inviting people to enjoy coffee while surrounded by a unique landscape. The design concept reflects a close relationship with its natural setting, drawing inspiration from local architecture to ensure harmony with the volcanic environment.

Site Design

The site has been selected to provide stunning views, with the coffee shop facing southwest-northeast. This orientation highlights a central observation deck that looks toward the Hverfjall volcano to the southeast. The building's shape mimics that of a smaller volcano, allowing it to blend into the landscape and encouraging visitors to connect with their surroundings.

Architectural Concept

The design pays homage to traditional Icelandic houses. This reference helps maintain a sense of continuity between the building and the area’s cultural heritage. Large glass walls allow natural light to fill the interior and offer wide views of the landscape, promoting a feeling of openness and connection to nature.

Interior Organization

Inside, the layout is arranged to foster interaction among visitors. Important spaces include a visitor center, toilets, an office, storage, a coffee counter, and a dining area, along with an exhibition hall dedicated to the volcano. This thoughtful organization promotes a community atmosphere where guests can enjoy each other's company as well as the views.

Design Details

Notable features enhance the character of the coffee shop, including roof openings that reflect the aurora borealis at night. This design choice adds depth to the experience, linking the building to the natural events occurring in the region. The outdoor and indoor areas flow together, allowing visitors to enjoy the surrounding flowerbeds while being protected, emphasizing the connection between architecture and nature.
