Nýja Borgin, or "The New Castle," sits at the Dimmuborgir site in Iceland. It serves as a visitor center designed to blend with the unique geological features of the area. The architecture reflects the natural shapes found in the surrounding black lava fields, striving to create a sense of connection between people and the environment. The design aims to invite exploration and create meaningful interactions with the distinctive landscape.

Design Layout

The building is positioned on a small hill, providing wide views of the landscape. This location builds a relationship between the structure and the surrounding terrain. Visitors enter through a central space that leads them to different areas. On the left is the main exhibition room, while the café is conveniently located on the right. This layout makes it easy for guests to navigate and encourages engagement with the various offerings.

Functional Spaces

A notable feature of Nýja Borgin is the multimedia room, which expands the exhibition area. This space can accommodate various presentations and group meetings. The floor in this room is lowered to match the slope of the site, allowing for comfortable seating arrangements. This attention to detail supports a user-friendly experience while maintaining a cohesive design with the building.

Materiality

The project uses materials that enhance the connection to the environment. The outer layer of the building is made from gabions filled with stones sourced locally, reflecting the unique geological formations of Dimmuborgir. This choice reinforces the bond with the surrounding landscape while providing a sturdy shell for the center. Inside, the use of wooden walls and roofs brings warmth to the interior spaces, creating a contrast with the rugged exterior.

Landscape Integration

Nýja Borgin reflects a commitment to the natural setting by minimizing its impact on the landscape. Adjustments were made to the parking area, allowing it to align with the existing contours of the site. This approach reduces the overall environmental footprint. A new road connection facilitates the arrival experience for visitors, making it simple for buses and cars to drop off passengers and park within a designated area.

One of the distinct features is the rooftop terrace, which offers expansive views of the landscape. This space allows visitors to take in the beauty of Dimmuborgir from above, enriching their experience and providing a platform to appreciate the unique geological formations of the area.
