5 key facts about this project
01
Columbarium integrates views of the surrounding forest through strategically placed apertures.
02
Design allows for both individual reflection and communal gatherings.
03
Constructed primarily from water-resistant plywood for durability.
04
Features a sculptural arrangement to enhance meadow exploration.
05
Reflects Latvian traditions of honoring the deceased through its form and function.

The focus is on integrating community values with the surrounding natural environment, particularly in relation to Latvian traditions surrounding death and remembrance. Set in an open meadow, the design reimagines the traditional Latvian homestead as a series of separated elements. These elements create spaces for families and friends to come together in mourning and celebration. The arrangement emphasizes both personal reflection and community interaction, forming a nuanced environment to support the grieving process.

Columbarium Design

At the center of the design is the columbarium, which contains niches for the ashes of loved ones. Each unit is designed to foster an intimate experience while remaining connected to the surrounding landscape. The presence of apertures in these structures offers framed views of the nearby forest. This invites visitors to engage with nature and highlights the cycle of life and death, which is an important aspect of Latvian cultural beliefs.

Sculptural Arrangement

The arrangement of the homestead elements throughout the meadow has a sculptural quality that enhances the overall experience. This layout encourages exploration and allows visitors to move through the space freely. The carefully placed apertures in the columbariums serve as spots for contemplation, where individuals can pause and reflect on their memories. Such design choices strengthen the link between the built environment and the natural setting.

Material Composition

Thoughtful material selection is key to the construction of the columbariums, contributing to both their function and appearance. Water-resistant plywood makes up the carcass of the niches, ensuring the structure remains durable while being lightweight. Timber battens provide support to the overall framework. Concrete is also used throughout the design, adding to the structural integrity and ensuring that the elements can endure outdoor conditions.

The design integrates nature and architecture in a way that respects local traditions while meeting modern needs. The columbarium’s apertures frame glimpses of the forest, inviting visitors to connect with the beauty of the environment. This interplay creates inviting spaces for contemplation and remembrance. Each element works in harmony, enhancing the overall impact of the design.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
