5 key facts about this project
01
The lodge features strategically placed frames that capture and highlight the surrounding desert landscape.
02
Its round shape helps prevent sand accumulation and allows natural wind flow.
03
The design includes a courtyard that utilizes water features for natural cooling.
04
Thick concrete walls with external insulation provide effective thermal performance.
05
Wildlife integration is achieved by minimizing visual disturbance to local fauna.

Located in the Oryx Protected Area of Abu Dhabi, the lodge engages thoughtfully with its natural surroundings. It serves as a space where visitors can experience the vast desert landscape while enjoying modern comforts. The design centers on the idea of framing views, allowing the beauty of nature to become an integral part of the lodging experience.

Framing Nature

The design utilizes frames to guide attention to the expansive desert. These openings allow the surrounding landscape to become part of the story told by the architecture. By framing nature, the design encourages a deeper connection between the lodge and its environment. The various perspectives offered invite inhabitants to appreciate the changing beauty of the desert throughout the day.

Architectural Form

The lodge features a round shape that helps with wind flow and prevents sand accumulation around the structure. Its understated form blends with the colors of the desert, creating a visual connection to the land. The design respects the natural environment, resulting in minimal disruption to local wildlife, especially the Oryx that roam the area.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the lodge is arranged to provide varied experiences for users through distinct spatial divisions. Each room has specific frames that offer different views, enriching how residents perceive their surroundings. This thoughtful layout ensures a balance between shared spaces and private areas, allowing guests to connect with each other while enjoying personal moments of solitude.

Sustainability Strategies

Sustainability features prominently in the overall design. High temperatures and temperature fluctuations present challenges in this environment. The courtyard plays a key role in cooling, using water features and shaded areas from trees to help manage heat. Thick concrete walls with insulation ensure good thermal performance, making the lodge suitable for local weather conditions.

The design includes skylights that let heated air escape, aiding ventilation and comfort inside. The integration of water tanks and septic systems supports an off-grid lifestyle, ensuring functionality without harming the ecosystem. As a result, the lodge offers inviting spaces that encourage interaction with the outdoors while prioritizing sustainable living.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
