The project stands as a poignant reminder of societal memory and the need for reconciliation, set in a thoughtful landscape that prompts visitor engagement. Its design features a fragmented form that symbolizes the impact of marginalization and historical injustices. This space serves as both a memorial and a platform for dialogue across diverse groups, allowing reflection on shared human experiences.

Conceptual Framework

The project is built on the understanding that there is a responsibility to honor both the memories of those who suffered and the experiences of those who are alive today. In embodying this concept, the design creates an environment conducive to contemplation and interaction. The physical presence of the structure enhances these narratives, inviting visitors to connect with its significance in a meaningful way.

Spatial Dynamics

The orientation of the monument is aligned with true North, which helps create interesting effects of light and shadow throughout the day. This intentional choice enriches the experience of the space, as the changing natural light highlights the monument’s features. The configuration encourages clear movement, guiding visitors on a journey through the monument while deepening their interaction with its themes.

Materiality and Texture

While specific materials are not extensively detailed in the presentation, the design makes use of heavy, rough textures. These selections reinforce the serious nature of the project. The quality of the surfaces invites a hands-on experience, allowing visitors to physically connect with the architecture. This connection contributes to an immersive experience that reflects the weight of the topics being addressed.

Symbolism and Interaction

Voids incorporated into the massing serve to balance the themes of memory and ongoing social dialogue. These empty spaces promote movement and contemplation, fostering a deeper understanding among visitors. Thoughtful integration of natural elements enhances the overall experience, creating a relationship between the monument and its surroundings while encouraging reflection on complex issues of human dignity.

The design features, together with its careful details, ensure that the monument resonates with visitors, leaving a lasting impression that connects memory with contemporary discussions about the past.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
