5 key facts about this project
Lirio d'Aqua is a series of cabins designed for meditation, yoga, and holistic treatments, located in the Vale de Moses Retreat near Oleiros in central Portugal. The design reflects a focus on creating tranquil spaces that encourage personal reflection and community engagement. Each cabin seeks to foster a connection with nature, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a peaceful environment.
Architecture Concept
The design features three different cabins called Pequeno, Medio, and Amplo, which translate to small, medium, and large. This variety allows the space to serve both individuals seeking solitude and groups looking for shared experiences. The overall architecture prioritizes flexibility and adaptability, ensuring that the cabins can accommodate different needs throughout the retreat.
Site Integration
An important aspect of the project is the transformation of a lower stone terrace into a garden, which brings new life to the area. This garden is meant to support native plants and flowers, creating a habitat for birds and pollinators. The addition of greenery enhances the beauty of the landscape and encourages visitors to engage with the natural surroundings throughout the seasons.
Structural Design
Each cabin has a circular shape and is elevated about half a meter off the ground, which helps them blend into the environment. The decks surrounding the cabins provide extra space and promote interaction with the landscape. The use of vertical board-formed concrete, made from earth and stone sourced from the location, gives the cabins a strong connection to the site and reflects the natural textures of the area.
Interior Experience
Inside, the cabins feature a light wood screen that discreetly conceals the bathroom and storage areas, which helps maintain a sense of openness. The careful positioning of each cabin enhances privacy while allowing for views of the nature outside. Floor-to-ceiling curved sliding glass doors invite in natural light and frame views of the Serra da Estrela foothills, encouraging a sense of connection with the landscape.
The cabins also include accessible rooftops that offer opportunities to enjoy the environment, whether it is witnessing the tree canopy or stargazing at night. These elements contribute to the calming and restorative nature of the retreat, providing spaces that support reflection and connection to the surrounding beauty.
