5 key facts about this project
01
Designed with staggered zones to enhance privacy and spatial dynamics.
02
Incorporates a photovoltaic array for sustainable energy production.
03
Features a steel framework for structural integrity and durability.
04
Outdoor spaces strategically integrated for maximum natural light.
05
Varied floor and ceiling heights to define functional areas without walls.

The design explores new possibilities for living in a compact space while maintaining a focus on functionality and comfort. Set in a residential area, the project features a 3D dwelling organized into four distinct zones. This layout aims to enhance the use of space while promoting a sense of connection and flow among the different areas.

Zoning and Spatial Arrangement

The project employs a staggered configuration of its zones, which allows for smooth transitions from one area to another. Each zone is arranged around a central axis, ensuring that the privacy needs of various spaces are carefully considered. By avoiding traditional walls and separators, the design takes advantage of openness, encouraging interactions among residents while maintaining personal space when needed.

Functional Areas

Within the dwelling, key living spaces include outdoor areas, a kitchen, a combined living and working space, a WC and storage unit, and a bedroom. Each area is thoughtfully designed and distinguished by changes in floor and ceiling heights, which create clear boundaries without physical barriers. This layout effectively meets the functional requirements of everyday life while adding visual interest to the home.

Sustainability and Structure

An important feature of the design is its emphasis on sustainability. The inclusion of a photovoltaic array captures energy from the sun, contributing to the dwelling's efficiency. This focus on minimizing environmental impact aligns with current trends in responsible architecture. The structural framework is made of steel, ensuring strength and stability, which are essential for accommodating the varied heights and complex shapes within the design.

Attention to detail is evident throughout the design, particularly in how outdoor spaces and terraces are integrated. These areas foster a connection to nature, allowing ample natural light to flood the interior. Each functional space is created not only for utility but also for enhancing the overall living experience, making it comfortable and engaging for those who inhabit it.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization.
