Enclosed and Exposed Cabins Featuring Local Materials for Eco-Tourism Retreat

Project in-detail

The design incorporates both enclosed and exposed cabin components, using locally sourced materials to create a sustainable eco-tourism retreat that connects visitors with the Latvian countryside.
5 key facts about this project
01
The cabins include both enclosed and open-air components for varied user experiences.
02
Locally sourced materials contribute to both sustainability and regional architectural authenticity.
03
Removable panels allow occupants to customize exposure to light and air.
04

05
The elevated deck design connects the two cabin components while ensuring accessibility.

Body & Soul is situated in the fertile farmlands of Skrunda, Latvia, within a landscape defined by greenery and gentle hills. Designed for eco-tourists, it includes a dual-cabin system that merges modern comfort with natural surroundings. The design focuses on creating a balance between private and communal experiences, allowing guests to connect with the landscape while enjoying the features of contemporary living.

Enclosed Component

The enclosed component, known as the body, has a compact floor plan that supports a full bed or twin bunk beds. This efficient use of space facilitates comfortable interactions among guests, ensuring privacy and warmth. Small windows with deep sills provide views of the landscape, framing the scenery while creating a cozy atmosphere, especially during winter months.

Exposed Component

The exposed component, referred to as the soul, features an open floor plan that invites interaction with the outdoors. This space encourages socializing and connects users with the elements. The design includes removable panels, allowing occupants to adjust their exposure to sunlight and fresh air. This flexibility enhances the experience, particularly in warmer weather when the open area promotes relaxation.

Construction Methodology

Cabins are constructed using a kit system that allows for efficient assembly by local craftsmen, supporting the local economy and minimizing construction waste. Each cabin is placed on a shared elevated deck, promoting accessibility and enhancing the connection between the two components. This construction approach aligns with sustainable practices, reflecting a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Materiality and Context

The project draws from traditional Latvian architecture, using sustainably sourced materials from nearby forests. This choice fosters a connection to the local environment. The cabins are arranged along a gravel road, ensuring privacy while maintaining a sense of seclusion. Trees are planted strategically to enhance privacy and preserve views of the surrounding landscape.

The thoughtful design balances private spaces with open areas, allowing for meaningful engagement with the Latvian countryside. Features such as deep window sills and adjustable panels enrich the experience, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the tranquility of their surroundings. Each element of Body & Soul contributes to a harmonious atmosphere where nature and comfort coexist.
