Embracing Local Limestone and Recycled Concrete in a Sustainable Olive Tree Residence

Project in-detail

Constructed with local limestone and reinforced with recycled concrete, the design intricately weaves an olive tree into its interior, creating a unique sustainable residence that celebrates regional agriculture and promotes cultural engagement.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed using recycled concrete for enhanced sustainability.
02
Integrated an olive tree as a central design feature within the courtyard.
03
Utilizes local limestone for durability and regional context.
04
Features a vegetated roof for improved insulation and biodiversity.
05
Designed to support natural ventilation through strategic window placement.

The architectural project Maison de l’Olive is situated in a region known for its rich olive cultivation, emphasizing the cultural significance and ecological value of the olive tree. The design integrates sustainable practices and natural elements, creating a harmonious relationship between the built environment and its surroundings. This structure serves as a residence and a venue for cultural events, highlighting local traditions and agricultural relevance.

The Maison de l’Olive exemplifies a thoughtful approach to spatial design, utilizing materials and layouts that emphasize natural light and connection to the outdoors. Key areas within the building include an entrance and exhibition area that serves as a welcoming space for visitors, an olive oil tasting room designed to facilitate the appreciation of local produce, and living spaces arranged around a central interior courtyard. The presence of the olive tree within the courtyard is a prominent design element that reinforces the interior's spatial flow and enhances the overall atmosphere.

One notable aspect of this project is its use of local materials which establish a connection to the regional landscape. Recycled concrete forms the primary structure, while local limestone contributes to both durability and visual continuity. Wood is used for interior finishes, providing warmth against the stone, while expansive glass windows enhance natural illumination and views of the surroundings. The green roof not only supports insulation but also contributes to sustainable drainage and biodiversity.

The project employs a minimalist design philosophy, focusing on functionality and clarity in form. The thoughtful placement of openings facilitates natural ventilation, reducing reliance on mechanical climate control. This focus on sustainability is further supported by the green roof and vegetation around the property, integrating ecological design principles that promote environmental stewardship.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
