02
A Secret Room offers a private space for personal reflection.
03

04

05
Strategically placed paths encourage both collective engagement and individual solitude.

The design interacts with a volcanic landscape, seeking to create a balance between shared experiences and moments of personal reflection. Located near sites such as Hverfjall, Grjótagjá, Dimmuborgir, Nature Baths, and Stóragjá, the approach highlights the connection between visitors and their surroundings. By offering distinct pathways, the design encourages users to engage with the dramatic geological features in ways that enhance both social interaction and introspection.

Collective Path

A central circulation route runs along the crater, allowing groups to explore the area together. This path serves as a gathering space where people can share experiences and appreciate the natural beauty. The design acknowledges the importance of communal activity while also presenting an opportunity for individuals to connect with the landscape. Visitors can walk side by side, taking in expansive views and engaging in conversation.

Viewing Platforms

Placed at higher points, the new viewing platforms invite visitors to step away from the crowd. These elevated areas provide a place to pause and take in the scenery without the distractions of a busy path. They encourage personal moments of reflection amidst the vastness of nature. Visitors can enjoy a sense of solitude while still being part of the larger landscape. Each platform is oriented to enhance visual interaction with the surroundings, allowing individuals to find their own space in the scene.

Secret Room

The Secret Room stands out as a hidden retreat within the design. This room is built to be soundproof and sheltered from the wind, giving people a private space to think and recharge. A candle placed within the room adds a simple yet meaningful touch, symbolizing a moment of warmth and clarity. This design element serves as a contrast to the openness of the surrounding views, allowing for quiet contemplation in a busy world. It embodies the idea of finding stillness amid movement.

Materiality

Aluminium foam panels, along with a metal frame structure and screw piles, serve as the main materials for construction. These choices are practical, designed to adapt to the demands of the volcanic landscape. The aluminium foam panels provide a lightweight solution, while the metal frame supports the elevated structures. The use of screw piles aids in stabilizing the design in a challenging environment. These materials work together to create functional spaces that extend the experience of the landscape.

Natural beauty and human interaction are at the heart of the design. The thoughtful arrangement of shared and private spaces allows visitors to explore their connection to nature. Each element serves a purpose, creating a narrative that highlights the interplay between the built environment and its surroundings.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
