Elevated Shelves and Cork Cladding in a Compact Nature Retreat

Project in-detail

Elevated on wooden pillars, the structure integrates a central wall of shelves and extensive glazing to create a compact living space that emphasizes sustainability and a strong connection to the surrounding nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated structure minimizes ground impact while blending with the forest.
02
Central wall of shelves optimizes space and separates communal from private areas.
03
Extensive glazing offers panoramic views and enhances natural lighting.
04
Vertical garden on the outdoor deck supports self-sufficiency.
05
Use of cork cladding improves insulation and environmental integration.

The Shelves House is situated in the Peneda-Gerês National Park in northern Portugal. It emphasizes a modern approach to sustainable living while harmonizing with its natural surroundings. The design showcases a box-like structure elevated on wooden pillars, which minimizes the impact on the ground and allows the house to blend into the forest. The layout promotes efficiency and comfort, catering to contemporary needs for both functionality and ecological awareness.

Spatial Organization

The interior of the Shelves House features a central wall of shelves that divides communal and private spaces. This choice maximizes the use of vertical space while ensuring easy access. Three distinct alcoves open to the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen, enhancing the functionality of the compact living area. This careful arrangement fosters adaptability, allowing residents to use the spaces for different activities and interactions as needed.

Natural Light and Views

Natural light plays a key role in the design, with a series of windows on the east, south, and west facades, along with a skylight. These features bring in daylight and create visual connections with the outdoor environment. The emphasis on transparency helps to establish a strong relationship between the indoor and outdoor settings. Residents are afforded views of the changing landscape throughout the day, which adds depth to their living experience.

Sustainable Features

The design incorporates various sustainable practices, highlighted by an outdoor deck that includes a vertical garden. This enables residents to grow their own vegetables, reflecting a commitment to self-sufficiency and sustainability. Materials used in the construction, such as wood and cork, were selected for their environmental qualities, contributing to energy efficiency and insulation.

Architectural Detail

A thoughtful design aspect is the placement of the bathroom at the highest point of the house, making good use of a large window to let in ample light. This design choice not only improves usability but also creates a peaceful atmosphere for the occupants. Overall, the Shelves House illustrates a balanced approach between modern living and respect for nature, providing a unique residential environment for its inhabitants.
