The HONG KONG COVID VERTI-CITY TOWER addresses the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic in an urban environment. Located in Hong Kong, the design focuses on integrating various functions within a single high-rise building. It combines residential, quarantine, and health areas to create a space that meets both everyday needs and public health requirements. The overall idea is to allow for safe movement and interactions among residents while maintaining necessary health standards.

Urban Integration

The tower incorporates diverse functionalities, starting with a Metro Station that acts as the main entry point for healthy individuals. This setup promotes organized access to the building while establishing distinct zones that keep healthy living areas separate from the Quarantine Zone. By clearly defining these spaces, the design aims to reduce the risk of virus transmission and ensure adherence to health protocols.

Vertical Circulation

A key design feature is the 4-storey Central Elevator system, which facilitates movement between the different levels of the building. This system is crucial for allowing easy and safe transit among residents and visitors. The Central Levels, known as Central 360 Level and Central 200 Level, provide essential services that enhance the building's functionality, creating spaces for daily life while prioritizing safety.

Health and Community Features

Independent balconies are included in the quarantine apartments, offering vital outdoor access for individuals in isolation. This feature is important for addressing mental well-being during quarantine. The design also integrates communal spaces, such as the sky garden and health zones, encouraging social interaction while still maintaining safety measures. These areas contribute to creating a sense of community within the tower.

Airflow and Environmental Considerations

An Urban Wind Tunnel is part of the architecture, improving airflow throughout the building. This element addresses one of the main concerns in public health by enhancing air quality and reducing airborne transmission of diseases. The inclusion of terraced landscapes supports sustainability and gives residents access to green spaces, promoting both physical and mental health.

The design details of the HONG KONG COVID VERTI-CITY TOWER illustrate how architecture can respond when facing public health challenges. By merging different functionalities, it aims to build a healthier and more connected living environment.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
