Elevated Portico with Mandala Symbolism in a Sustainable Retreat

Project in-detail

Elevated above the ground, the retreat incorporates a portico with mandala symbolism and utilizes local materials to create a tranquil space dedicated to meditation and yoga.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated structure enhances the spatial experience by creating a sense of lightness.
02
Portico serves as a transitional space, inviting contemplation before entering the meditation area.
03
Incorporation of mandala symbolism deepens the spiritual connection within the environment.
04
Local materials are utilized to promote sustainability and a strong sense of place.
05
Distinct volumes are designed to separate communal and private spaces effectively.

The design focuses on creating a space dedicated to meditation and yoga, aligned with the natural landscape. Located on a slope surrounded by coniferous trees, the Yoga House takes advantage of its broad views over the valley. This setting encourages tranquility and supports the practices of mindfulness. The concept highlights the connection between the built environment and the contemplative activities of yoga, promoting a deeper engagement with meditation through thoughtful spatial organization.

Distinct Volumes

Two separate volumes are present in the layout, each with its specific purpose. The main hall is designed to be distinct from the additional unit housing other necessary functions. This separation allows for diverse experiences without compromising the identity of each area. The main volume's elevation above the ground symbolizes the idea of lifting the physical body during meditation, creating a unique spatial relationship with the surrounding environment.

Sustainable Approach

Sustainability plays a crucial role in the design, aligning with the principles of critical regionalism. While specific materials are not mentioned in detail, the emphasis on using local and upcycled materials showcases a commitment to environmental responsibility. This approach connects the structure to its site and helps reduce ecological impacts, highlighting a sense of place that resonates with the surrounding landscape.

Spatial Experience

The design features a portico that serves as the entryway into the meditative space, enhancing its spiritual quality. This area uses light and shadow to create a sensory experience that invites reflection and mindfulness. The mandala's symbolism enriches the atmosphere, adding depth to the architectural experience and enriching the narrative surrounding the space.

Careful consideration of spatial elements results in an environment that fosters well-being. The focus on natural light and ventilation encourages occupants to connect with the landscape, enhancing their yoga and meditation practices in a meaningful way.
