The architectural project "DI PORTA" is situated along the historic navigli in Milan, Italy, serving as a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional cranes that once played a vital role in the city's economy and infrastructure. This design not only pays homage to the historical significance of the area but also functions as a public space, enhancing the interaction between the urban community and the canal environment.

Central to the project is a monumental crane structure that acts as both a visual landmark and a functional observatory. By elevating visitors above the navigli, it provides panoramic views of the waterway and surrounding cityscape, facilitating a unique perspective that encourages exploration and engagement with the public realm. The crane’s design prioritizes accessibility while integrating educational elements about the historical context of the area.

The layout incorporates a seamless pathway that traces the contours of the canal, enhancing pedestrian connectivity. The materials selected for construction—predominantly steel for structural integrity, concrete for pathways, and wood for seating areas—address both aesthetic and functional requirements. The choice of materials ensures durability while maintaining a connection to the environment, fostering an inviting atmosphere for visitors.

The project's unique approach lies in its dual function as a cultural landmark and a vibrant social space. Elevated seating areas and thematic landscape features promote interaction among visitors, allowing for community engagement through various activities. Additionally, the strategic lighting design enriches the experience during evening hours, ensuring the space remains inviting and accessible after sunset.

Another noteworthy aspect of this project is its integration of historical elements within a modern context. The crane structure serves as a focal point, inviting reflection on Milan's industrial heritage while also providing modern amenities to enhance the user experience. This thoughtful combination of old and new is evident throughout the design, making "DI PORTA" a compelling example of how architecture can honor history while addressing contemporary needs.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
