Elevated Living Spaces with Bamboo Integration in Rural Cambodia

Project in-detail

5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes stilted elevation to enhance flood resistance.
02
Incorporates local bamboo as a primary building material.
03
Features open layouts that promote natural ventilation.
04
Reflects traditional Khmer architectural principles.
05
Encourages community interaction through spatial design.

The "COSMOS OF ENTITIES" project is located in rural Cambodia and centers on the themes of historical, cultural, and natural interdependence. The aim is to develop new hut designs that respect local heritage while addressing contemporary living conditions. The design takes inspiration from traditional Khmer architecture, particularly the layout and characteristics seen in ancient temples like Angkor Wat, to effectively respond to the needs of the local community.

Design Philosophy

The design philosophy incorporates key elements from Khmer architecture, focusing on the use of vertical and horizontal axes. These axes create a framework that enhances accessibility and establishes clear hierarchy within the space. The layout encourages community interaction while safeguarding privacy, which is vital for daily life in rural settings. By thoughtfully arranging spaces, the design manages to balance the need for social connection with moments of solitude.

Cultural Context

Incorporating the vernacular architecture of Cambodia, the design reinterprets traditional stilted houses. These elevated structures aim to protect residents from flooding and connect them spiritually with their environment. Elevating homes helps mitigate climate-related challenges faced during monsoon seasons. Natural cross ventilation is a critical feature that supports comfort indoors, reflecting a sustainable approach that adapts to local weather conditions.

Material Considerations

Specific materials are not detailed, but there is a clear emphasis on the use of local resources and construction methods that honor cultural traditions. The potential use of non-timber forest products, especially bamboo, is mentioned as a viable option for sustainable building practices. This focus ensures that construction methods remain environmentally friendly while celebrating local craftsmanship and traditions.

Spatial Arrangement

The arrangement of spaces facilitates a connection between people and the natural surroundings. By blending historical and cultural elements into modern forms, the design resonates with its environment. The thoughtful integration of local customs enhances the overall narrative of the project, creating areas that encourage a sense of community while respecting individual needs. A key feature is how the design allows for both private areas and communal gathering spots, reinforcing the importance of social ties in daily life.
