Elevated Cabins of Perforated Brick and Rattan Integration in Community Living

Project in-detail

Elevated cabins constructed from perforated brick and adorned with rattan walls create a harmonious blend of privacy and community engagement in a sustainable living environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated design protects against flooding while enhancing views of the surrounding landscape.
02
Utilization of local Cambodian brick promotes cultural heritage and sustainability.
03
Rattan walls provide natural ventilation and adaptability in cabin layouts.
04
Communal spaces are strategically positioned to foster social interaction among residents.
05
Perforated brick construction allows for passive cooling in a tropical climate.

The "Cabinfamily" project is designed as a series of interconnected living units focused on fostering community interactions while providing individual privacy. Located in Cambodia, the project draws inspiration from traditional architectural practices while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding landscape. The overall layout is composed of a central communal area surrounded by private cabins, allowing for both social gatherings and personal retreats.

The project serves the dual function of providing private and shared spaces, promoting an inclusive living experience. Its architectural arrangement is strategic: the community area encourages social interaction among residents, while the cabins ensure a sense of seclusion. This configuration reflects an understanding of communal living in a cultural context while meeting modern lifestyle needs.

Unique materials such as traditional Cambodian brick and locally sourced wood are utilized throughout the project. The incorporation of perforated bricks in the community area allows for natural ventilation, enhancing thermal comfort. Roofs made from sheet metal ensure structural durability against local weather conditions. Rattan is used in the cabin design, combining local craftsmanship with functional aesthetics.

The elevated nature of the cabins provides flood protection and offers residents a visual connection to the surrounding greenery. Each cabin's design includes transparent partitions, bridging indoor and outdoor spaces while maintaining protection against insects. Pathways made of concrete and paving stones improve accessibility and connect the different elements of the project.

The project distinguishes itself by its balance of private and public spaces, creating a harmonious living environment that respects both community engagement and personal space. Its design approach emphasizes sustainability, utilizing local materials and construction techniques to minimize environmental impact while maintaining cultural relevance.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
