Efficient Modular Homes Built with Cross-Laminated Timber

Project in-detail

Constructed with Cross-Laminated Timber, the modular units offer an efficient and customizable solution for sustainable living, addressing the pressing needs of urban housing.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed entirely from Cross-Laminated Timber to enhance sustainability.
02
Features charred wooden shingles that provide both aesthetic appeal and fire resistance.
03
The design incorporates a bent A-frame that optimizes structural integrity and space efficiency.
04
Customizable modular units allow for adaptability to various site conditions and user preferences.
05
Utilizes advanced manufacturing methods to streamline construction and reduce waste.

The project presented within the C3 PLATFORM emphasizes modular home construction and addresses the growing challenges posed by urbanization and population increase. It aims to provide efficient and practical housing solutions while prioritizing sustainability and adaptability. The modular units are designed to incorporate flexible layouts, promoting space efficiency and ensuring comfortable living environments suitable for modern lifestyles.

CREATE PHASE

In the first phase, designers focus on creating modular units that can be adjusted to fit various site conditions and user needs. This involves developing living spaces that include key areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. The arrangement is optimized to enhance functionality while retaining a cohesive look that appeals to different tastes.

CUSTOMIZE PHASE

The second phase allows users to interact with a digital platform to modify existing layouts according to their preferences and constraints. This flexible approach offers numerous pre-set configurations while ensuring that any changes made do not compromise structural stability. The result is a personalized living space that reflects individual needs and lifestyles.

CONSTRUCT PHASE

The final phase integrates modern manufacturing techniques into the construction process with an emphasis on efficiency. A notable feature is the use of Cross-Laminated Timber, which is recognized for its low-carbon benefits. This material serves as the primary element in constructing the modular units, making it easier to assemble and promoting environmental sustainability.

The project includes two construction methods: Volumetric and Panelized Construction. Volumetric construction involves using pre-assembled modules that are transported to the building site. Panelized construction focuses on creating individual components that are put together on-site. Both methods enhance construction efficiency and help reduce the need for on-site labor.

Sustainable features such as solar panels, rainwater collection systems, and water recycling solutions are incorporated into the design. This reflects a commitment to environmentally friendly practices. The careful arrangement of spaces, along with the use of specific materials and advanced building techniques, seeks to meet the demands of modern living while minimizing ecological impact. One standout aspect is the thoughtful roof design, which not only provides functionality but also contributes to a welcoming atmosphere that encourages engagement and interaction.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
