The project "In Lasting Light We Remember Them" is located in Chinguacousy Park, Brampton, Ontario. The design takes the form of a cylindrical monument, resembling a concrete chalice. This space serves as a place for remembering the victims of genocide while creating a sense of connection to historical events. Its overall concept highlights a dual purpose: to act as a sanctuary for reflection during the day and a lit memorial at night, emphasizing the importance of memory.

Cylindrical Form

The monument's cylindrical shape provides both a sense of enclosure and openness. It invites visitors to engage with their surroundings while encouraging contemplation. The vertical design draws the eye upward, creating a connection between earth and sky. This upward movement symbolizes hope, reminding visitors of the resilience that emerges from difficult histories. The use of concrete gives the structure a strong and lasting presence.

Punctured Portals

One notable aspect of the memorial is the punctured portals that are incorporated into its design. These openings connect the monument to significant genocide sites around the world. During the day, natural light enters through these gaps, enhancing the reflective quality of the space. The portals not only allow for light but also create visual links, encouraging visitors to connect emotionally and spiritually to the themes of loss and remembrance.

Illumination and Atmosphere

At night, the chalice changes character as firelight shines through the punctured openings, creating a warm, inviting glow. This illumination turns the structure into a torch that brings comfort and a sense of continuity to its purpose. The light serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering and honoring those who have suffered. This nighttime atmosphere fosters an intimate environment where visitors can quietly reflect on the memorial's significance.

Overall Design Intent

The elements of "In Lasting Light We Remember Them" come together to form a meaningful and contemplative space. The balance between form and light highlights the memorial's purpose, encouraging visitors to engage with their shared humanity. The clear design promotes a narrative of remembrance, ensuring that the stories of those lost remain alive in the collective memory of society. The memorial stands as a testament to the endurance of hope amidst darkness.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
