5 key facts about this project
At the foot of Hverfjall volcano in the Myvatn region of Iceland, a new building blends into its dramatic landscape. It serves as a coffee shop and visitor center, welcoming individuals who wish to explore the natural beauty around them. The design reflects the essence of volcanic activity, resulting in a form that is both organic and engaging.
Architectural Form
The structure features flowing curves and wavy surfaces inspired by the movement of lava. It is divided into three sections, each echoing different aspects of volcanic behavior. The first section showcases soft curves similar to the shape of lava rivers, which not only connects visually with the landscape but also allows the building to integrate harmoniously with its setting.
The design continues with a second section that rises with angular forms, capturing the unpredictable nature of flowing lava. This section conveys a sense of energy and change. The final part of the building is defined by strips that mimic the patterns created by cooling ropy lava, enhancing the connection with the geological context.
Material Integration and Sustainability
Large windows provide ample natural light and unobstructed views of the surrounding environment. The layout includes practical features such as a designated pedestrian path and parking spaces to accommodate visitors easily. To address the climate, the design employs mineral wool insulation for better thermal performance, and waterproof layers help protect the structure from harsh weather.
Interior Design and Furnishings
The interior spaces are thoughtfully designed, including areas for exhibitions that inform visitors about Hverfjall's geology. Customized furniture like the Melt Chair and Void Chair draws inspiration from the textures created by volcanic activity. Each piece not only serves a purpose but also enhances the overall connection to the natural environment.
The building's design creates a relationship between the inside and the extraordinary views outside, allowing visitors to feel surrounded by nature while enjoying a comfortable space.
