The Sunstone Retreat is located between the east coast of Lake Myvatn and the Hverfjall volcano in Northern Iceland. Serving as an extension of the existing Vogafjos Farm, the retreat aims to provide guests with privacy and a strong connection to nature. The concept is inspired by a mythical Icelandic crystal, which symbolizes guidance and clarity. This idea shapes the design, focusing on a thoughtful balance between personal spaces and shared areas that foster interaction among visitors.

Design Intent

The layout features a central main building that includes essential functions like the reception, storage, living area, and kitchen. This arrangement separates communal spaces from the individual cabins, enhancing the feeling of solitude while still supporting social engagement. Natural stone walls curve around shared areas, creating a gentle transition that links the architecture with the surrounding landscape.

Cabin Structure

Each cabin reflects traditional Icelandic architecture, offering a modern twist that emphasizes uniqueness. Framed by two stone walls, the cabins have character and allow for enhanced views of the landscape. This thoughtful design supports both privacy and an appreciation for the natural environment. The careful placement of the cabins reduces visual and spatial interference between them, contributing to a tranquil atmosphere for residents.

View Integration

Cabins feature pitched roofs that align with the terrain, blending into the landscape. Roof windows placed above the beds provide direct views of the night sky, allowing visitors to observe the northern lights from their own space. This design choice creates a strong link between the occupants and their environment, enhancing the experience of staying at the retreat.

Materials and Sustainability

The project emphasizes environmental harmony through its approach to materials. Turf roofs offer insulation and create a connection with the landscape, integrating the buildings into their surroundings. The use of natural stones references local geology and contributes to the retreat's identity, reinforcing the relationship between the structures and the Icelandic environment.

Thoughtful orientation and carefully considered design details make the Sunstone Retreat a distinct part of the Northern Icelandic landscape. This combination of privacy and connection to nature results in a functional and inviting environment for visitors.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
