Curved Pathways and Natural Ecosystems in a Community Retreat

Project in-detail

Incorporating curved pathways and a gentle hill that fosters a natural ecosystem, the design creates an inviting retreat with private gardens and essential amenities for communal living.
5 key facts about this project
01
Mise en abyme concept integrates storytelling within the architectural form.
02
Curved pathways guide movement and enhance connection with nature.
03
A gentle hill facilitates natural rainwater collection at the center.
04
Private gardens offer secluded retreats within a communal environment.
05
Designed to support a local biodiverse ecosystem throughout the site.

The project "Mise en abyme: Shove into the Garden of the Abyss" is located near the Venta River, surrounded by open fields. Its design revolves around the concept of mise en abyme, integrating the outside environment with a narrative experience within. This approach creates spaces that vary in function, including a parking area, a stay zone, and a dock, ensuring that each element serves visitors effectively while remaining part of a cohesive whole.

Site Organization

The arrangement of the site is carefully thought out, creating distinct areas that serve specific purposes. This division takes advantage of the access points from both the road and the river. By facilitating movement between public and private zones, the design encourages interaction and exploration. Each area is positioned to make the most of the geographical landscape, enhancing user engagement with their surroundings.

Pathway Design

Pathways play a significant role in the layout, designed with gentle curves to follow the natural terrain. This design helps maintain the site’s existing character while guiding visitors through. By promoting a natural flow of movement, the pathways encourage users to connect not only with the architecture but also with one another, fostering a sense of community within the environment.

Boundary Integration

A unique approach to boundaries is evident in the design, where traditional limits are blurred. This allows for a more flexible interaction between different spaces. Public areas remain open and inviting, while private zones offer accommodations like dining and sauna facilities nestled within landscaped gardens. This thoughtful integration encourages a balance of solitude and social interaction.

Landscape Ecosystem

Incorporating a low, gentle hill as part of the landscape design aids in creating a softer transition between spaces. This hill obscures some visual boundaries while broadening the views across the fields. Additionally, it supports the natural collection of rainwater at the center, contributing to an ecosystem that enhances biodiversity. This design choice reflects an emphasis on ecological awareness and sustainability.

As people move through the project, they encounter a blend of built spaces and nature, creating an environment that invites reflection and connection. Each design element works together, offering a rich experience in both functionality and aesthetics.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
