The Timber Stand is an innovative architectural design project developed with the purpose of enhancing urban public spaces. Located in high-traffic areas, particularly in Farragut Square, Washington, D.C., this design serves as a portable reading room that promotes reading and community engagement. The project aims to transform the traditional experience of waiting—such as when charging electric vehicles—into a productive and socially interactive environment.

The Timber Stand features a cross-shaped core made of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), measuring 7 feet in height. The CLT column supports a roof that is designed with a tongue and groove pattern, providing weather protection for users. Each quadrant of the structure is equipped with sound-insulating acoustic panels, which offer privacy and create a conducive atmosphere for reading. The design includes modular elements such as adjustable seating and a bicycle parking track, catering to a diverse urban demographic.

The Timber Stand distinguishes itself through its multifunctional design that accommodates individual readers as well as small groups. This flexible approach allows for the structure to be adapted to different contexts, either functioning as a standalone unit or integrating with multiple units for larger community events. A notable feature is the book exchange box, which encourages literature sharing among users, fostering community interactions.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility. 

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design.
