The architectural design project "Divide for Harmony" is conceptualized as a response to the evolving dynamics of workplace environments, particularly in the context of remote work. Located along the Oncheon Stream in Busan, South Korea, this project focuses on integrating natural elements with functional workspaces to create a conducive environment for productivity and community engagement. The design promotes adaptability, fluidity, and sustainability, addressing the contemporary needs of professionals who seek balance in their work and personal lives.

Spatially, the project is organized into distinct zones, each serving specific functions. Personal workspaces are designed for concentrated tasks, offering privacy and a sense of seclusion. In contrast, flexible spaces are characterized by their multifunctional layouts, allowing for meetings, collaborations, and other group activities. Rechargeable zones provide opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation, incorporating elements such as meditation spaces and outdoor terraces that connect users with nature. The careful arrangement of these areas fosters both individual focus and social interaction, reflecting a modern approach to office design.

Integration with Natural Elements A defining feature of "Divide for Harmony" is its seamless integration with the surrounding environment. Large glass facades maximize natural light, erasing boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces and encouraging interaction with the Oncheon Stream. The use of wood as the primary material aligns with sustainability principles, facilitating a harmony between the structure and its natural setting. This thoughtful material selection not only enhances the aesthetic quality of the design but also contributes to the overall acoustic comfort and environmental performance of the building.

Adaptability in Design The project employs unique design approaches that cater to the flexibility required by contemporary work practices. The modular layout of the workspace allows areas to be reconfigured based on user needs, offering an innovative solution to the static nature of traditional office environments. This adaptability extends to the communal areas, designed to foster collaboration and creativity among users from diverse backgrounds. The emphasis on social connectivity, combined with an understanding of the local culture and geography, results in a space that serves as both a workplace and a community hub.

"Divide for Harmony" stands out within the realm of architectural design for its thoughtful consideration of user experience, environmental sustainability, and the interplay between work and nature. The project serves as a modern model for integrated office spaces that prioritize well-being and adaptability. The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
