Fractures In Time: A Reminiscence Into The Unpleasant Past is a memorial designed to recognize historical atrocities. Located at coordinates 43.7221751N -79.7212913W, it uses monolithic structures to symbolize significant events and create a space for reflection and learning. The concept centers around the interaction between space and light, allowing visitors to engage with the stories of the past.

Design Concept

The memorial features an arrangement of monoliths, each one representing a specific instance of genocide shown on an overlay of a global map. This placement enhances the emotional engagement of visitors, allowing them to connect with the weight of history. The large forms serve as a bridge between people and the natural world, inviting contemplation on the nature of humanity.

Spatial Arrangement

A sunken path leads visitors from the lively areas of the park into quieter, reflective spaces. This gradual descent encourages a shift in focus, guiding individuals away from daily distractions to a solemn atmosphere. The design promotes accessibility and invites exploration, with the monumental forms enriching the experience of remembrance.

Materiality

Corten steel and concrete are the main materials used in the memorial. Corten steel develops a protective layer over time, symbolizing strength and the passage of time—important themes for the memorial. Concrete provides a solid foundation and contrasts with the organic shapes of the monoliths, helping to create a unified visual identity.

Illuminated Experience

At night, the interior walls of the memorial produce a warm glow that stands out against the dark surroundings. This lighting transforms the space, making it more inviting and encouraging visitors to engage with its purpose. The interaction of light and shadow enhances the solemnity of the site, enriching the experience for everyone who visits.

The layout and elements of the design create a path through history, where each part prompts reflection and remembrance. The central fire element serves to anchor the overall experience, providing a focal point that ties together the themes of memory and time. Visitors are invited to engage with the past in a meaningful way, reminding them of the lessons it holds for the present and future.
