The project at the southern border of the United States addresses the complex issues surrounding immigration and the human journeys tied to it. Located in Arizona's Ironwood Forest National Monument, it functions as both a memorial and a space for reflection. The design is expressed as an "unreachable desert garden," capturing the harsh realities faced by migrants in search of a better life. This understanding forms the foundation for an environment that encourages contemplation and remembrance.

Design Intent

The design focuses on creating a space for reflection and remembrance. Visitors are invited to engage deeply with the narratives surrounding migration, allowing for both personal meditation and opportunities for communal connection. The spatial arrangement guides individuals through a journey in the desert landscape, promoting an awareness of the complexities of migration and the stories of those who traverse this challenging terrain.

Environmental Integration

Attention to the environmental context is crucial. The project recognizes the extreme conditions of the desert, where temperatures can reach 106°F (41°C). It offers not only a shelter from the heat but also a means for visitors to contemplate the challenges faced by migrants. Natural elements are thoughtfully included, ensuring that the design respects and complements the surrounding landscape. This approach helps to merge the built environment with the distinctive characteristics of the desert.

Material Consideration

While specific materials are not mentioned in the presentation, the approach hints at a design that blends with the landscape rather than competes with it. Durability is likely a key focus, ensuring that structures withstand the desert environment while remaining unobtrusive. This subtle consideration for materiality supports the overall aim of creating a respectful and impactful space for reflection.

A series of pathways within the design provides opportunities for exploration and personal reflection. The relationship between the built form and natural surroundings encourages visitors to engage with the narratives of hope and loss. Each step through this carefully crafted space contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex stories that unfold in the desert landscape.
