Concrete Viewing Platform Framing Volcanic Vistas in Iceland

Project in-detail

Rising from the landscape, a concrete viewing platform captures panoramic views of the Hverfjall volcano and Lake Mývatn, offering an elevated space for observation and connection with the unique Icelandic terrain.
5 key facts about this project
01
The platform's design is inspired by the gentle contours of the Hverfjall crater.
02
Concrete is used throughout for both structural and aesthetic purposes.
03
The viewing axes focus specifically on the landscape's key features.
04
Elevation enhances observation and interaction with the surrounding area.
05
The form integrates organically with the rugged Icelandic terrain.

The design inspired by the Hverfjall volcano features a raised viewing platform set against the rugged landscape of Iceland. The structure is intended for observation, encouraging visitors to engage with the surrounding environment. By aligning itself with the viewing axis of both the lake and the volcano, the platform allows people to experience the natural beauty of the site from an elevated position.

Design Concept

The project emphasizes a specific orientation that enhances the experience of important landscape features. By lifting the viewpoint above the terrain, the architecture turns observation into a more engaging activity. The gentle shape of the Hverfjall crater influences the curvature of the platform, helping it blend with the natural setting.

Materiality

Concrete is the main material used in the design, serving both structural and aesthetic roles. This choice connects the platform to the harsh landscape of Iceland, ensuring it can withstand local weather conditions. The robust nature of concrete contrasts with the surrounding rugged terrain, establishing a clear and functional relationship with the environment.

Viewing Experience

The design carefully frames views of Lake Mývatn and the adjacent volcanoes, directing attention to critical visual points. The alignment of the viewing axes encourages exploration and invites deeper interaction with the landscape. As visitors move around the platform, they are offered varying perspectives that encourage reflection and appreciation of Iceland's distinct geography.

Landscaped Integration

The platform’s form mirrors the gentle contours of the crater, enabling it to coexist with the landscape. This decision creates a narrative within the design, allowing the structure to appear as if it is part of the environment. Smooth transitions within the form help guide visitors across the platform, inviting them to appreciate the uninterrupted vistas that define this unique location.
