The Wine Tasting Room in Alenquer is located at the junction of winery facilities and expansive vineyards. This venue serves not only as a place for wine tasting but also as a spot to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The design is centered around a pre-tensioned concrete beam that shapes the organization of space, guiding visitors through an engaging and well-defined experience.

Structural Organization

The building’s central beam is a key feature, as it governs the overall structure and flow of movement. This beam provides necessary support while also creating clear pathways for guests. As visitors enter, the circulation routes are thoughtfully aligned with the beam, leading them through various functional areas and ultimately into the main tasting room.

Interior Spatial Experience

Approaching the main room, visitors pass through a series of transitional spaces, including dimly lit areas that house bathrooms and a small kitchen. This sequence builds anticipation, culminating in the tasting area where large windows open up to views of the vineyards. The absence of columns in this room contributes to a feeling of openness, allowing natural light to enhance the connection between the interior and the outdoors.

Materiality and Aesthetics

Concrete sandwich walls with centric insulation are used to create a comfortable environment. This choice of material supports the building’s climate control while offering a clean, straightforward appearance. The concrete contrasts with the natural surroundings, inviting a dialogue between the built space and the landscape outside.

Contextual Integration

Positioned on a slight rise, the building's location is intentional, providing visitors with views that encourage interaction with the vineyard. This careful placement allows individuals to engage deeply with the wine tasting experience. The design concludes with a cantilevered roof that appears to float, enhancing the lightness of the space. This thoughtful detail underscores the connection between the interior environment and the stunning views of the landscape beyond.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
