5 key facts about this project
The project titled *Coalescence* explores the connection between personal spaces in Cambodian yoga huts and the larger context of Hindu temples. It is set in a calm environment that supports reflection and relaxation. The design focuses on creating individual sanctuaries for wellness activities while also promoting social interaction. By reimagining traditional architectural elements, the project fits the needs of modern users, making spirituality accessible in daily life.
Mandapa Transformation
The Mandapa, which historically serves as a gathering space in temples, is rethought as a porch in this design. This porch acts as an open area for meeting and interaction. It allows people to engage with one another while surrounded by nature. The layout encourages a sense of community, with easy access to both the exterior and interior spaces, blurring the lines between them.
Transitional Spaces
The Antarala is redesigned from a typical vestibule into a functional hallway. This area connects different parts of the hut, effectively guiding movement from the porch to other essential spaces. It establishes an organized flow throughout the interior, making transitions smooth and intuitive. This enhances the experience of navigating the various areas and contributes to a sense of coherence.
Sanctum and Circumambulation
At the heart of the design is the sanctum or womb, which functions as a personal sleeping space. This area is crucial for individual reflection and wellness activities. Surrounding the sanctum, the circumambulation, or Pradakshina, creates a path for meditation and contemplation, leading users to a terrace designed for yoga sessions in a natural setting. This encourages both personal retreat and connection to the environment.
Materiality and Light
Cladded marble is a key material in the project, providing a sense of permanence associated with sacred spaces. The use of marble allows for the play of light and shadow, creating various atmospheres throughout the day. Carefully placed openings allow natural light to filter in, enhancing the sense of tranquility. This thoughtful design detail fosters a peaceful and reflective environment for all users.
