Vine Retreat Wats is situated in the rural area of Cambodia, located between Phnom Vour Mountain and the South coast. The retreat is designed to foster spirituality and mindfulness while connecting with the natural environment. The concept is based on the term “Wat,” which means “temple grounds” in Khmer. This creates spaces that support meditation and self-reflection, giving visitors an opportunity to escape and unwind.

Spatial Arrangement

The layout encourages a smooth transition from the outside world to a tranquil space. Guests enter through a welcoming threshold defined by a pitched roof. Pathways lead them toward living areas, gradually immersing them in a peaceful atmosphere. The planning of the structures tells a story, guiding visitors through various stages until they arrive at dedicated meditation rooms. Consistent orientation in a Southwest-Northeast direction enhances privacy and offers protection from the sun.

Use of Natural Light

Natural light is an important element in the design of the Wats. Translucent facades allow daylight to filter gently into the interior spaces. This choice reduces distractions from the outside and creates a calming atmosphere. The relationship between light and space encourages contemplation and supports the retreat’s purpose.

Sustainable Practices

The construction method emphasizes sustainability and respect for the environment. The project utilizes reclaimed and locally sourced materials, which align with its ecological goals. Notable materials include charred timber for roof cladding, plywood with waterproofing membranes, and prefabricated teak trusses. Shallow concrete foundations with upstands not only ensure stability but also help limit the impact on the surrounding landscape.

Terraces extend beyond the structures, offering shaded areas that invite quiet reflection. These outdoor spaces blend with the environment, providing locations for visitors to experience nature while enjoying the retreat's calming influence.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
