Catenary Curves and Green Roof Integration in a Community Wellness Center

Project in-detail

Catenary curves define the architecture while a green roof promotes biodiversity, creating a community wellness center that seamlessly integrates artistic expression with sustainable living practices.
5 key facts about this project
01
Catenary curves enhance structural integrity and aesthetic flow.
02
A green roof supports biodiversity while blending with the landscape.
03
Limestone walls connect the building to the local geology.
04
Urban farming elements engage the community and promote sustainability.
05
Distinct zoning separates public interaction from private retreat spaces.

Los Pasos is an Art Residence and Wellness Center located in La Puebla de Fantova. The center combines artistic expression, community involvement, and environmentally friendly practices. Inspired by Antoni Gaudí, the design reflects three key themes: Art, Life, and Legacy. The approach demonstrates how architecture can harmonize with the surrounding landscape while serving the needs of its users.

Design Concept

The design centers on the use of catenary curves, helping to connect various structural elements. This technique enriches both the appearance and strength of the building, allowing for spacious areas without sacrificing stability. The forms are shaped by the natural contours of the site, ensuring that the structure blends well with its environment.

Zoning and Circulation

The layout clearly differentiates between public and private spaces. A central area functions as a gathering point, where people can interact and engage in activities. The private sections are arranged to provide quiet and solitude. The plaza serves as the main navigational point, guiding visitors throughout the site. Ramps promote accessibility for everyone, ensuring all can enjoy the spaces comfortably.

Materiality

Selected materials play an important role in achieving both function and aesthetics. A concrete roof offers durability while supporting the design's complex shapes. Masonry brick is used to reflect traditional construction methods, linking to local architectural styles. Additionally, limestone in the walls connects the building to the regional landscape, reinforcing its sense of place.

Sustainability and Engagement

A strong focus on sustainability is evident in the design. Green roofs replace lost vegetation, enhancing biodiversity and allowing the center to blend more closely with nature. Urban farming components encourage local agricultural practices. This aspect invites community participation, allowing residents to interact with their environment and build a sense of shared responsibility.

The changes in structure and shape create spaces that encourage creativity and wellness. Each area invites exploration and interaction, leading to a dynamic environment where art and community thrive together.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
