The Jafnvægi Tower is a viewing platform located between Karlagjá and Kvennagjá, designed to serve as a landmark for visitors exploring the Grjótagjá Caves. Positioned directly above a fissure formed by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, the tower's design reflects the geological features of its surroundings. It employs a split structure that emphasizes balance and engages visitors with the unique context of the area.

Design Concept

The tower is defined by a series of right-angled triangles that create an elevated form. This geometric design mirrors the natural shapes found in the landscape and symbolizes the tension of the tectonic divergence below. The lifted structure directs attention to the fissure, inviting visitors to connect with the geological formations.

Structural Elements

Inspiration for the tower comes from traditional Icelandic architecture. Its design reflects the characteristics of local roofs, promoting a connection to the cultural heritage of the region. The two triangular sections of the tower are connected horizontally, enhancing the sense of unity despite their distinct forms. Vertical columns stabilize the structure, ensuring a secure foundation while allowing for its elevated presence above the ground.

Materiality

The choice of materials for the structure focuses on their practicality and visual integration with the environment. The exterior is clad in sheet metal, which provides a uniform appearance that blends with the natural landscape. Inside, polycarbonate panels allow natural light to filter through, creating a sense of openness and inviting the views from outside into the interior spaces.

Visitor Experience

An open floor grate serves as the main circulation route, guiding visitors into the structure while offering views of the fissure and the landscape beyond. The internal layout includes waiting areas, offices, and observation platforms to accommodate the needs of visitors. Bridges link the two sections of the tower, providing different perspectives of the geological features, enriching the exploration experience.

The design of the Jafnvægi Tower connects visitors to the geological history of the Icelandic landscape. It creates a dialogue between the built structure and the natural environment. The interplay of light, space, and structure offers an engaging experience that reflects the relationship between nature and design.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
