The project "A Place to Rest" is located at the Castle of Chiocciola, positioned along the historical Via Francigena. It provides a calm environment for terminally ill individuals while also accommodating pilgrims on their journey to Rome. The design combines the cultural context of the area with the practical needs of its users, creating a soothing atmosphere for reflection and companionship.

Design Concept

The central idea focuses on balancing private spaces for patients with communal areas that encourage interaction. The layout includes structures associated with hospitality, such as Magioni, Spedali, and Osterie, which are important to the region's history. This blend highlights the function of the facility as both a resting place and a welcoming space for visitors.

Spatial Organization

The building features sturdy exterior walls that define the separation between public and private areas. The main entrance is marked by a staircase leading into a central courtyard. This transition invites visitors into a layered experience, contributing to a sense of community and quiet reflection within the facility.

Material Use

Brick is a key material in the project, connecting the design to the local architectural tradition. Its use not only enhances the building's durability but also respects the craftsmanship found in the region. This choice creates a unified appearance, linking the new structure with the historical significance of the site.

Functional Distribution

Attention to space distribution ensures privacy for hospice services while promoting social interaction in areas like the dining room and library. Features such as meditation rooms, chapels, and libraries show a commitment to holistic care, offering environments suited for both solitude and social engagement.

Large openings and porches are incorporated to maximize natural light and airflow, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere throughout the interior. The result is a facility that balances the needs of its users with the peace of its surroundings.
