5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes locally sourced rocks to blend with the surrounding landscape.
02
Features a fecal decomposer system for efficient waste management.
03
Incorporates a biogas outlet for energy recovery from waste.
04
Constructed with Hollow Structural Sections for lightweight strength.
05
Designed as a functional rest stop in a remote mountainous area.

The design addresses the challenges of sustainability and environmental integration in a mountainous setting. Located in a remote area, it functions as a rest stop that manages human waste while transforming it into a source of energy. The primary design concept focuses on functionality and ecological responsibility, emphasizing a connection between human activity and the natural landscape.

Structural Integrity
The building features Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) in its steel framing. This choice provides the necessary strength while keeping the overall structure lightweight. The design enhances stability and allows for quicker assembly. A corrugated metal roof adds to the durability of the building, ensuring it can withstand various weather conditions while offering protection to those inside.

Material Choices
Locally sourced rocks are used in the exterior, allowing the facility to blend with its surroundings. This thoughtful choice minimizes visual impact while reinforcing the connection to the landscape. Sheet steel is utilized to enhance durability and long-lasting performance. Inside, diamond plate flooring is installed in high-traffic areas. This material choice is not only practical but also designed to endure daily use.

Functional Systems
The design prioritizes efficient waste management through features like a fecal decomposer container and a methane gas tank. These systems play a crucial role in converting waste into energy, highlighting the commitment to sustainable practices. A biogas outlet further enhances utility, providing essential services and supporting the facility's operations while being mindful of environmental concerns.

Environmental Responsiveness
Wire mesh is integrated into the exterior design. It enhances security and allows for airflow, which is vital in this remote area. Gutters are strategically placed to manage rainwater runoff effectively. This consideration for water management showcases attention to ecological responsibility. Each design choice works together to meet user needs while supporting a respectful relationship with the surrounding nature.

The thoughtful integration of the facility within its environment is evident. The design preserves the natural beauty of the mountainous landscape while providing a functional space for human use. Each element works in harmony, ensuring minimal disruption to the scenic surroundings.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
