The Iceland Lake Mývatn Community House functions as a key facility in the municipalities of Skútusta-ahreppur and Thingeyarsveit. Located on low hills with views of Lake Mývatn, the building acts as both a recycling center and a communal space. Its design connects community engagement with environmentally friendly practices, fostering a thoughtful relationship with the landscape.

Architectural Concept

The design features two lightweight shed roofs that provide protection from the weather, enhancing the overall look of the structure. These roofs allow the building to be used throughout the year, benefiting the community in various seasons. The dimensions of the spaces have been defined by a cradle-to-cradle approach, focusing on efficient use of resources by following standard fabrication sizes. This mindset significantly reduces waste during construction and operation.

Functional Layout

A two-story solid core organizes the building’s various functions, including a waste disposal area and a community greenhouse. The spaces are oriented toward the south, which maximizes daylight and improves energy efficiency. This thoughtful arrangement promotes a stronger connection between users and the beautiful landscape surrounding the building.

Materials and Sustainability

Materials have been chosen with care, focusing on durability and local relevance. Wood is used for finishes and as structural Glulam elements, while local basaltic stone is incorporated into retaining walls. Concrete serves as a strong foundation material, contributing to the project’s longevity. These selections reflect a commitment to sustainability, ensuring the building fits well within its natural setting.

Community Interaction

The design encourages social interaction through open spaces and tall areas that allow for various activities, such as work and learning. The arrangement of spaces is flexible, promoting engagement and knowledge sharing among community members. User experience is central to the architecture, as the layout fosters a sense of community in line with its sustainable values.

Large windows and openings invite sunlight into shared areas, creating a warm atmosphere and framing views of the surrounding nature. This light-filled environment enhances the overall experience for visitors, making the space more inviting and enjoyable.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
