The design presents a unique interpretation of volcanic forms, redefining what a building can be. Located in a landscape marked by natural features, the concept turns the structure into a spatial experience that resonates with the notion of a volcano. Through distinct sequences—The Outside, The Inbetween, and The Inside—the design encourages a connection between the built environment and its natural surroundings, emphasizing both purpose and visual appeal.

The Outside

The journey begins at the exterior, where the building evokes the raw qualities of a volcano. Its shape mirrors the natural landscape, offering an organic profile that feels familiar. Covered in local-hewn basalt stones, the outer layer enhances the visual and tactile connection to the environment. This material not only highlights the geological character of the design but also allows the structure to blend into the topography, capturing the nuances of volcanic rock.

The Inbetween

After experiencing the Outside, visitors move into the Inbetween, which serves as a connector between spaces. This underground pathway takes full advantage of the existing land, creating a natural link between what is outside and what is inside. The design encourages exploration by engaging the senses, providing a physical experience that alters the perception of time. It offers a necessary transit route while also enhancing the overall visitor experience by inviting curiosity and discovery.

The Inside

Entering the heart of the building reveals the Inside, a vibrant space intended for a range of activities. It is organized in a circular format, promoting fluid movement and interaction among visitors. Ample natural light floods this area, creating an inviting atmosphere that changes with the seasons. Designed to accommodate various uses—from exhibitions to community gatherings—the Inside becomes a central hub for engagement and creativity.

The careful integration of space and light supports the narrative of this design, reflecting the relationship between the architecture and its natural context. Each element has been thoughtfully arranged to serve practical functions while embodying the spirit of the geological phenomena it aims to represent. The balance of elements within the Inside enriches the experience, encouraging visitors to connect with the architectural landscape in meaningful ways.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
