The "Songs of Amber Columbarium" is a memorial space located in the Forest Cemetery of Riga, Latvia. It is designed to honor those who have passed away while connecting visitors with the rich cultural narratives of the region. The project emphasizes the cyclical nature of life and death, reflecting this concept through its forms and surroundings. The overall design aims to create a peaceful environment for remembrance.

Conceptual Framework

At the heart of the design is the vesica piscis, a shape often associated with fertility and new beginnings. This form inspires the design of the Amber Memory Hall, which features two gentle shells that lean towards each other. This configuration creates a feeling of embrace while still allowing interaction with nature. The architecture invites quiet reflection and connection, blending the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Spatial Organization

Visitors enter the columbarium through a series of paths that guide them on a journey of remembrance. Some pathways run underground, offering an immersive experience. Water features accompany these paths, as narrow streams flow alongside and within the space, enhancing tranquility. The sound of flowing water contributes to a meditative atmosphere, aligning with the purpose of the memorial.

Niche Design and Materiality

The columbarium includes five hundred niches, each designed to echo the natural beauty of amber. These niches allow families to honor their loved ones by placing personal items within them. The main construction material is cast-in-place concrete, selected for its strength and durability. Amber window elements pay tribute to the local cultural history, inviting light into the memorial and connecting it to Latvia's rich heritage.

Interactive Features

Sound plays a vital role in the experience, with each niche equipped with speakers that project traditional Latvian melodies. These sounds are activated by touch sensors, creating an engaging atmosphere for visitors. This feature allows an exchange between the living and the memories of those who have passed, linking cultural practices to personal remembrance.

As night falls, the amber-windowed niches glow with integrated LED lights, mimicking the effect of stars. This soft lighting adds warmth to the space and enhances the ambiance, providing a calming backdrop for reflection and remembrance. The interplay of light and shadow fosters an environment that resonates with the spirit of the memorial's purpose.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
