5 key facts about this project
The Vogafjós Film Pavilion and Restaurant is located in the rugged landscape of northern Iceland, designed to enhance the visitor experience of Icelandic cinema. The design combines practical functions with a strong conceptual foundation that reflects the unique characteristics of its surroundings. The project explores the contrasts between volcanic and glacial elements, creating a space that connects with its environment.
Theater Design
The theater is inspired by the Hverfjall volcano, representing the weight and darkness of volcanic rock. This design approach fosters an intimate atmosphere that invites engagement with cinematic experiences. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the storytelling of Icelandic cinema, all while being reminded of the geological context that shapes the region.
Restaurant Features
The restaurant is oriented to provide patrons with views of the Aurora Borealis. Its design reflects the qualities of glacial ice, defined by transparency and lightness. This contrast creates a visual and experiential dialogue between the two spaces, linking the solid, tactile qualities of the theater with the airy brightness of the dining area. This balance aims to enhance the overall visitor experience.
Site and Spatial Configuration
The layout consists of two distinct volumes, with the theater accommodating 50 seats and the restaurant designed for larger groups. The entrance is aligned with the path leading to the Grjótagjá Caves, which reinforces a connection to local landmarks and supports smooth movement throughout the space. Design choices have considered both functionality and visitor interaction.
Material Choices
Materials are chosen to reflect sustainability and relevance to the local environment. Locally sourced volcanic rock is used for both interior and exterior surfaces, which connects the design to its geographical context while reducing environmental impact. Birch wood features in several architectural elements, adding warmth to the space. The restaurant includes bio-glass, which creates dynamic light effects that enhance the atmosphere.
At the intersection of the two volumes lies a three-story assembly. This space features a bar on the second floor and an observation deck on the third. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape under the aurora, blurring the lines between the built environment and the natural scenery.
