The Pilgrimage of Light is a residence designed for a lama couple, located near the Chuanzhu Temple in Tibet. The design reflects elements of traditional Tibetan architecture while incorporating a spiritual essence that is central to the occupants’ lives. The Meditation Room stands as the heart of the home, emphasizing the importance of spiritual practice and connection to heritage. The layout encourages movement upward, imitating the experience of pilgrimage.

Living Spaces

The ground floor features essential living spaces, including a Bedroom, Living Room, Kitchen, Storeroom, Bathroom, and a Small Courtyard. Each area is tailored to serve specific needs, supporting the daily routines of the couple. This arrangement strikes a balance between personal privacy and communal interaction, allowing for both solitude and togetherness.

Spatial Experience

Windows are carefully placed throughout the residence to connect inhabitants with the surrounding environment. The lowest window opens to the vibrant life below, offering glimpses of everyday activity. The middle window frames the view of Chuanzhu Mountain, while the upper window looks out toward the Chuanzhu Temple. This arrangement highlights different perspectives, encouraging occupants to engage with their surroundings from various heights.

Light and Atmosphere

Natural light is purposefully excluded from the design, aligning with the traditional practices of the lamas. The absence of light variation provides a controlled environment for meditation and quiet reflection. By minimizing distractions from external light, the design fosters a space that invites deep contemplation and spiritual connection.

As occupants move through the residence, the changing perspectives create a dialogue between the building and its surroundings, mirroring the inward journey of spiritual exploration. The design emphasizes not just physical elevation but also the growth of the soul through dedicated space and experience.
