The Girding Icelandic Movie Pavilion is located near the Grjótagjá Caves in Iceland and serves as a gathering space for the community to explore Icelandic cinema. The design focuses on blending the building with the surrounding landscape, encouraging visitors to venture inside and connect with the cultural significance of the films. The pavilion presents a unique underground structure that creates an engaging experience for all who enter.

Architecture Concept

The design of the pavilion creates a transition from the outside to the inside, guiding visitors into an underground cinema experience. The entrance heightens curiosity and anticipation as guests make their way beneath the surface. This careful arrangement ensures a smooth movement through the various spaces, fostering a sense of adventure from the moment one enters.

Functional Spaces

The main cinema area sits at the center of the pavilion, designed to promote a communal environment. Surrounding this space, multifunctional areas are available for hosting a wide variety of events, workshops, and exhibitions. This flexibility allows the pavilion to provide more than just film screenings. It becomes a place where people can gather, share experiences, and engage with each other. The layout thoughtfully connects outdoor spaces with indoor activities, enhancing the overall experience.

Materiality and Light

Concrete and steel are the primary materials used in the pavilion, chosen for their strength and visual impact. These materials help the structure withstand Iceland's varied weather conditions while also contributing to a cohesive design. The roof echoes the local landscape, allowing the building to blend with its environment naturally.

Lighting plays an important role throughout the pavilion, offering both practical visibility and artistic enhancement. Light installations add a dynamic quality to the space, inviting visitors to interact with their surroundings. The careful use of illumination not only guides people but also enriches the atmosphere, creating a welcoming experience that reflects the spirit of Icelandic cinema.

The journey leads to the cinema, where visitors find themselves in a carefully designed environment that balances artistic intention with a focus on community needs. The combination of functional spaces and thoughtful design details ensures that the pavilion serves as a meaningful cultural hub for all who enter.
