The Loop offers a unique journey through the history of cinema, set against the backdrop of Iceland's natural landscape. The design translates the evolution of filmmaking into a pathway for exploration, allowing visitors to engage with significant moments and technologies in cinema. The concept revolves around a looped route, which guides people through various themed experiences, immersing them in the story of film.

Concept and Layout

The layout begins with a drive-in cinema that immerses visitors as soon as they arrive. The entrance hall showcases a praxinoscope, which connects the audience to the origins of animation and sets the stage for the cinematic journey ahead. This design encourages a thoughtful flow from one experience to another, helping guests appreciate the timeline of filmmaking while experiencing the space.

Thematic Exhibition Spaces

Visitors navigate several tunnels focusing on different themes in cinema. They start with silent films and then move toward the introduction of sound. Each tunnel creates opportunities for curiosity and engagement, providing insights into the history of film technology and the stories told through cinema. This arrangement aims to not only inform but also connect visitors emotionally with the content.

Interactive Elements

One notable aspect of The Loop is the outdoor pool, which blends projection technology with the environment. Visitors can see images reflected on the water while using small boats to enhance their experience. This interaction allows guests to engage with the cinematic narrative directly, blurring the lines between viewer and film and making the experience more memorable.

Architectural Context

The design draws inspiration from sea pebbles found on Icelandic beaches, aligning the structure with its surroundings. The cladding of the immersive room is influenced by the form of Drakkar boats, adding a layer of cultural significance. An outdoor amphitheater with drone-operated projections extends the project’s reach, pushing the limits of how cinema can be showcased and experienced.

The design weaves together the history of cinema and a landscape that enriches the exploration. It creates a space that invites visitors to immerse themselves in visual storytelling, blending technology and nature into a cohesive experience.
