5 key facts about this project
The design at Mývatn Lake in Iceland includes a collection of cabins and a host and guest building, all integrated into the surrounding landscape. The project aims to connect visitors with the natural beauty of the area, particularly the Northern Lights, while offering a comfortable and functional living experience. The blend of modern design with traditional elements creates a space that feels both familiar and inviting.
Cabins
Each cabin is equipped with triple-glazed skylights that help occupants enjoy unobstructed views of the northern sky. The roofs have a curved shape made from corrugated metal sheeting, which also supports solar panels for energy efficiency. Natural light enters the cabins, brightening the interior and enhancing the overall living environment.
Ground Floor Plan
Timber vertical cladding wraps the exteriors, providing a natural finish that complements the landscape. Inside, plywood wall linings add warmth and simplicity, making the space feel cozy. Sleeping areas are positioned in mezzanine nooks, allowing for easy interaction with the sky above, while large windows frame views of Mývatn Lake, connecting the inhabitants to the landscape outside.
Utility and Sustainability
A prefabricated utility module is integrated into each cabin. This module contains essential facilities like a shower and a self-composting toilet, providing modern conveniences without compromising sustainability. Rainwater is collected and filtered for use in the cabins, and a hot water system connected to the fireplace enhances energy efficiency. The foundation consists of timber screw piles and a surrounding gabion rock wall, minimizing impact on the site and providing flexibility for future adjustments.
Host and Guest Building
The host and guest building features distinct wings for both groups, ensuring privacy while allowing for shared experiences. Skylights and a curved roof adorned with solar panels bring in abundant natural light. The timber portal structure is arranged in a circular configuration, inviting the outdoors inside. An internal courtyard serves as a peaceful gathering spot, surrounded by grassy mounds that offer informal seating. The design encourages a feeling of connection to the environment while providing a relaxed atmosphere for visitors.
