Transparent Dome Constructed with ETFE and Steel for Immersive Cinematic Experience

Project in-detail

The circular cinema, enveloped in a transparent ETFE dome, seamlessly integrates with the stark Icelandic landscape while providing an immersive environment for cinematic experiences.
5 key facts about this project
01
Circular design enhances communal viewing and reduces visual obstructions.
02
ETFE material allows for maximum light transmission while maintaining thermal efficiency.
03
Rotating elements in the dome provide flexible interior configurations for varying events.
04
Integration with the landscape offers unobstructed views of the Northern Lights during screenings.
05
Incorporation of natural elements creates a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors.

“Sanctum in Sanctum” is an architectural design project located in Eystriland, Norðurland, Iceland. The project features a circular cinema designed to blend cinematic experiences with the surrounding landscape. The prominent transparent dome structure is engineered to create a connection between users and the natural environment, enhancing the overall movie-watching experience and fostering a sense of community and interaction.

The primary function of “Sanctum in Sanctum” is to serve as a cinema that provides a unique viewing experience. Positioned strategically within Iceland’s scenic vistas, the design prioritizes immersion in both the filmic narrative and the elements present in the environment, allowing visitors to engage with the stories being told through a lens enhanced by the extraordinary backdrop.

Innovative Design Approaches

One of the noteworthy aspects of this project is its use of ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) for the dome structure, which offers advantages in terms of weight, light transmission, and thermal efficiency. This material choice distinguishes the cinema not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its energy performance, aligning with sustainability standards.

The circular design is fundamental to the project, facilitating an unobstructed view of the screen from all angles, thus promoting an inclusive atmosphere for viewers. Rotating elements integrated into the dome allow for flexible interior layouts, enabling different configurations that can change the ambiance and engagement levels throughout various events and screenings.

Integration with Landscape Features

The architectural design emphasizes transparency, allowing natural light to flood the interior and providing an uninterrupted view of the external landscape. This design choice not only enhances the emotional connection to the outdoor environment but also allows the indoor experience to vary according to the changing elements outside, such as the Northern Lights or the varied weather conditions typical of the region.

In terms of layout, the project incorporates essential facilities that enhance visitor interaction, including an entrance reception area and a snack café. These features serve as social hubs for patrons to gather before and after screenings, reinforcing the conceptual focus on shared experiences within the architectural design.

“Sanctum in Sanctum” presents a thoughtful, immersive approach to cinema that blends architecture with landscape, elevating the act of watching films in a way that engages the audience more deeply with the environment. To explore this project further, including detailed architectural plans, sections, and designs, readers are encouraged to delve into the project presentation for a comprehensive understanding of its innovative architectural ideas.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
