The BETWEEN GAPS Visitor Center is located in the unique geological region of the Grjótagjá area in Iceland. The design focuses on the relationship between two tectonic plates, illustrating themes of separation and union through its two distinct volumes. The center serves as a space for visitors to explore the surrounding landscape while offering necessary services and facilities.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the visitor center enhances the experience for those who come to explore. Each volume is carefully positioned; one faces Karlagjá and is designed to make the most of natural light and solar energy. The second volume is oriented toward Kvennagjá, creating a connection between the two while encouraging visitors to engage with their surroundings. This arrangement promotes a smooth flow between different areas, both public and administrative.

Functional Layout

Attention to function is evident in the center’s detailed floor plan. On the first floor, visitors will find a variety of essential facilities, including a storage area, office, waiting area, kitchen, and toilets. The office is placed to maximize views of the caves, which aids both supervision and visitor safety. This design reflects the importance of operational efficiency, meeting the diverse needs of those who visit.

Materiality and Aesthetics

Material choices play a vital role in linking the visitor center with its environment. The upper part of the building is made from translucent polycarbonate, which allows natural light to enter while protecting visitors from the elements. This choice creates a bright atmosphere inside. The lower section features wood rainscreen cladding, which blends with the natural surroundings. Inside, wood paneling adds warmth and enhances the overall connection to the landscape.

Observation and Interaction

An observation platform on the third floor further encourages visitors to connect with the beautiful scenery. This area provides a unique view of the dramatic topography, enriching the experience of the site. It allows a moment for reflection, where visitors can take in the landscape and appreciate the relationship between the visitor center and the natural world around it.

Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
